The discussion is based on three modules
discussed in class. You are required to incorporate the main topic of this assignment
into the modules discussed in the lecture as given below.
Module 1 –
This
module addresses the corporate disregard for the health and safety of
employees. Our thesis is that profit-maximizing behaviours practiced by
corporations under capitalist competition are hazardous to employees’ health
and safety. This module will discuss the history of unsafe working conditions
in capitalist countries and how employees’ health and safety were affected, and
briefly consider several industries that have been highlighted in the recent
past: the construction, chemical manufacturing, mining, and nuclear power
industries. Five key aspects of safety crimes are to be discussed:
§ The
different types of unsafe working conditions and consequences
§ The
factors associated with unsafe working conditions.
§ Legislation
and sanctions against unsafe working conditions
§ How
Western countries “export” safety crimes
§ The
problems with enforcement of unsafe working conditions
Module 2:
The goal of this module is to address some of
the most critical issues related to environmental crime and the discourse of
regulation. We will begin with a discussion of some core concepts related to
the study of environmental crime as a subtype of corporate crime. We will then
examine various forms of environmental crime and historical patterns of
environmental crime in Canada. Thirdly, we will analyze different types of
organizational violators and their motivations for degrading the environment.
This module concludes with a discussion on the discourse of regulation as a
response to environmental crime.
Module 3:
This module considers some major forms of white
collar crime that are not easily classified as corporate, occupational, or
governmental crime. They are hybrids that combine attributes of two or more of
the established forms of white collar crime. Two especially significant hybrid
types are discussed in this module: crimes of globalization and financial
crime. This module has a significant practical implication that white-collar
crime has been a material and significant reason for massive losses in
financial institutions and of investors.
