Description of Assignment: The formation of a communities (national, ethnic, international) is a common theme in our class. We have seen how the formation of a community can be a positive force—as in the birth of new nation states—or a negative force, as in colonialism. For this week, I want you to consider how communities were constructed under totalitarian regimes using evidence from Alfred Rosenberg’s The Jewish Question as World Problem and the Nuremberg Laws. Please answer the following essay question: How did Hitler and the National Socialists use the idea of “community” to create the Nazi state? In your essay, be sure to discuss the central ideas behind Nazi ideology (what characterized the regime, key goals, etc.). You should also consider how community functioned to include and exclude certain groups and what it meant to be a citizen under Nazi rule.
Format: As explained in the syllabus, essays should be between 600 and 1000 words. You must include an introduction that provides some context for the time period and presents your thesis. Please organize your ideas into separate paragraphs and remember to double space your essay so that I can leave in-text comments.
Sources/Citations: For this assignment, you must use the textbook and both primary sources. If you submit an essay with no references to the textbook you will lose points. Please remember to use parenthetical citations (source title and page number) as indicated in my Plagiarism Guide when you are quoting the primary sources or paraphrasing information from our textbook. Failure to include citations will affect your grade. REMINDER: No outside sources are permitted for this assignment. Use of outside sources (including any contextual information taken from the internet) is considered plagiarism in this course.
Tip: Don’t stress too much about the biographical details of Rosenberg as an author. I am aware that he is not in the textbook, so what you need to know about him is included in the document. The main goal is for you to think about his work as a piece of evidence that demonstrates the mindset of the Nazis. Do, however, pay attention to the dates, as these two documents were produced at different times during Nazi rule.
