MLA format, thesis, works cited at end. The paper is on a book by Beverly Daniel Tatum. “Why Are All The Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?” I already have 2 pages written, but I need at least another 3, not including the works cited page.

Week Six Goals
1) Submit your Final Draft, and include a Works Cited. Do not put the Works Cited in a separate document — put it at the end of the paper on a new page. Make sure you use MLA format for the heading. I will be comparing the Middle Draft and Final Draft, so make sure there are significant differences. Don’t worry, you will not make your paper worse. (!) I want to see that you made changes from draft to draft. You do not need to change everything, but at least consider the suggestions and see if they will improve your paper. You will not be able to submit late papers.
Essay Two: Argumentative Essay

1. Read “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?” (Beverly Daniel Tatum). I included the PDF in Week Three and Week Four.

2. Question: “Tatum focuses on adolescents and she is concerned with the man ways cultural “norms” in the United States perpetuate very narrow ideas about what it means to be African American in the United States. Write an essay in which you draw on ideas and specific examples from the author in order to consider how much of our “education” about race in American culture often happens in such small, seeming innocuous exchanges. Based on her ideas, what conclusions can you draw about the most effective ways we might change this “education”?

Use two additional essays (from Google Scholar or the Golden Library Database) to support/refute your argument. Please do not use .coms.

Page length:
5-6 pages plus Works Cited and one annotation (I will explain the annotation in detail before you need to turn it in).
1) Make sure you have a heading, in MLA format.
2) Make sure you have a title that tells us information about your argument.
3) Make sure your Introduction is at least 3/4 of a page, and includes a strong thesis statement.
4) Include a Works Cited at the end, which includes the Tatum essay.

Some things to keep in mind:

1. What is the conversation you are joining? What is the issue being debated/discussed? What are the different sides a person might take in this debate?

2. What is your thesis (i.e. what is your argument)?

3. Why is this topic important? Do you state this somewhere in your paper? If not, where can you add this information?
