Architectural critique – Office and adaptive re-use of a building

Task
Write an essay about the Kirchplatz office about the re-using of the existing building. (Information and Sources are in the attachment)

Architectural critique: Imagine to write an article for a famous newspaper or an architectural magazine. You are a famous architectural journalist. You are introducing the chosen project to the audience; you analyze and evaluate it. Obviously, you take in your wide knowledge of architecture, lifestyle trends and history to explain the project and give your own opinion.
In the end you will have written a 1.000 words essay following the given structure.

Structure

1. Introduction part
Shortly introduce which project you are talking about. What? Who? Where? When? Why is it relevant to write about it? Was
there a recent opening? Is it interesting for current developments in architecture? Keep it short. You can give more information in an
info box (size, year of erection, place…)

2. Short Description
Try to explain the project to the audience, so that the reader can understand what was done and what the main aspects of the
planning and design are. But keep this short, too! How can you describe the whole project in 3 to 5 sentences? Old purpose of
building, new usage, which main functions, obvious strong design principles? You can integrate more details in the third part!

3. Analysis/Interpretation
This should be the most important and extended part of your text. Answer questions like: How are new elements linked to the
old? Are they contrasting or matching? Is the old structure treated with respect, hidden or ignored? How are the old and new design
elements linked to the client/owner? Do they express a certain philosophy? What role does the old building play in this game? Is
the design appropriate for an office? Are there any practical obstacles? Is there a link between design and context (surroundings,
place, historic aspects, former use?) How are colors and (existing and new) materials connected? How is lighting solved? Which
effect do the design elements have emotionally, functionally, symbolically…? Is there a certain sustainability approach?
You will not be able to answer all questions, you may find your personal special aspects. As a critic you will have a personal
approach and maybe a favorite topic you usually aim at. Find your own focus, but look at the projects widely before! In any case the
re-use and the link between old and new should be addressed as well as the project’s relevance for today’s urging issues.

4. Evaluation/Conclusion
Now it is time to give your judgement. Is it a good solution? Is it a good sample for the future? Is it especially innovative? Why?
Why not? What can we draw out of it? What could have been done better?
As a famous journalist you want to show off a bit: So you want to let everyone know that you know the architectural
world, historic movements and philosophical ideas. Therefore, you should try to integrate this knowledge: A hint or
comparison to another similar project, to earlier solutions or a quote that underlines your judgement.
