To make this project a bit more interesting, I am asking you to participate in a fictional World’s Fair of 1250, held by the very real Emperor John III. Modern World’s Fairs, sometimes also known as International Exhibitions, are grand displays from all over the world, held by countries, corporations, and organizations to display their products or technologies. They are places where the exhibitors compete for attention in order to gain prestige. Emperor John III really was interested in finding and collecting intellectual and artistic works from all over the known world.
For this project, I am asking you to imagine you are the leader of a kingdom, city, organization, guild, or merchant community between the years 1000 and 1250 CE and design a display to demonstrate the best your group has to offer. Your display should take the shape of a PowerPoint or a word document with images and descriptions of the displays.
The group you imagine to represent any community in the regions we have studied in Chapters 8 and 9 and be located in Europe, North Africa, or the Middle East. You could be a specific guild, or a city with a special product, or a monastery displaying illuminated manuscript, or a manor with advanced agricultural techniques, just to name a few. Allow your imagination to run free–but ask me if you have any questions or need suggestions.
