Typed (word-processed), 12-point Times New Roman font, double spaced, 1-inch margins
Between 3 and 4 full pages long, no shorter or longer. Attempts to lengthen the paper artificially (for example, by using large font size for punctuation) will result in point deduction.
Give a (very) brief overview of all the pieces on the program, discussing details such as instrumentation, genre or type of the pieces (as space allows). Spend less than a page on this. The nature of your overview will depend on the kind of concert you attend. If there are four or five pieces, it’s a good idea to write about each individually, but if there are twenty, you’ll have to be more general. If you attend an opera (a one-piece concert, essentially), you might just write a paragraph on this.
Pick two of the pieces that particularly capture your attention. For each, are you attracted more to how the sounds are combined in artful and interesting ways (in other words, do you find yourself thinking more about how the piece is put together), or do you find yourself thinking more about what the music seems to express or say? What aspects of each piece compel you to respond that way? Be as specific as you can, using terminology from class to discuss qualities of the music.
To what culture or community do the performers and audience members seem to belong? In what ways can this be connected to why this musical event was designed and executed in this particular set of ways? What inferences can be made from the video about the purposes the performers have for the event? What perspectives, beliefs, traditions, or needs seem to exist behind the musicians’ choice to perform in it and the audience’s choice to be present to experience it? In reflecting on your answer, consider aspects of the video that might not seem obvious at first: the size of the performance space, the type of room, the types of musicians, the style of performance, the existence (or lack) of an elevated stage, the clothing people wear, the way the audience behaves (sitting? standing? active listening? dancing? interacting with the musicians? conversing during the music?), the extent to which the performers communicate or interact with the audience, and so on.
