Both of this week’s assigned stories–“John Lamar” by Rebecca Harding Davis and “My Contraband” by Louisa May Alcott–are, in part, about the future of race relations in the United States. Both of them were written on the eve of Emancipation, and both begin to imagine a United States in which black and white people will coexist, not as slave and master, but as something like citizens who are equal under the law.
What seem to be the similarities and differences between Davis’s and Alcott’s visions for the future of race relations in the United States? Cite (using page numbers) the best evidence from each story.
