Project D Experience Deaf Dinner Syndrome – ASL&121 SU21

ASSIGNMENT:
Choose one of the following to complete this assignment, Eat a meal with at least four other people (relatives, friends, etc.) you can choose to eat out at restaurant or at home.
You are the only person to be Deaf during the meal.
You will wear ear plugs during the meal.
The other people should talk to you the way they normally do, however you cannot use your voice.
Try to lip read during your family’s or friend’s conversations.
You must stay at the dinner between fifteen to thirty minutes.
After the meal remove your ear plugs, then ask the others what they talked about during the meal.
Describe your experience in a response paper. Copy and paste each question, then write your answer underneath.
Be sure your answers are thorough and complete. One sentence answers will not be accepted.
Using the same answer for more than one question will not be accepted.
Support your answers with specific references and text page numbers. Any time you have more than one answer for a question, number your answers.

Who did you hang out with? Friends or family?
When did you go? (date and time)
Where did you go?
Describe your experience as Deaf person. How did you feel?
Lip reading can be frustrating. Describe three specific things you found frustrating about lip reading. Number and elaborate your thoughts.
Were you able to keep up with the conversation as a Deaf person? If not, what specifically kept you from keeping up with the pace and flow of the conversation?
Compare lip reading of two individuals at the dinner. Which one was easiest to read? Which one hardest? What made one easy and the other hard?
How did the others treat you? (For example: When you did not understand, did he/she say “never mind”? Did they stop and make sure you understood before going on?)
Did you enjoy your friend/family gathering?
Did you find yourself wishing that the others at the dinner would sign? Why or why not?
Can you imagine how Deaf feel during any conversation when signing is not an option or not available?
After the meal what did your family say they talked about? How much did you miss or misunderstand? Give examples.
As a hearing person what benefits do you enjoy during a usual day to day meal with other hearing people? What advantages would a Deaf person have sharing a meal with other Deaf people? Explain your answers.
List three things you learned from this experience.
