Phil 300 – Introduction to Philosophy
Goal: To provide you the opportunity to satisfy these course objectives:
1. Articulating and describing key concepts, ideas and arguments
2. Critically analyzing and criticizing various arguments for soundness and validity
3. Present a thoughtful, interesting, and well structured paper.
Write a 3-5 page double spaced essay on one of the following prompt:
1. In the video: You don’t have free will, but don’t worry, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpU_e3jh_FY Sabine Hossenfelder argues that free will is incompatible with determinism and that free will is an illusion. If she is correct about free will, this looks problematic. Critically explain her reasoning and critically discuss it. Is she correct that free will is an illusion? Is she correct that if it is, that there’s little reason to be concerned about such a conclusion?
This paper is due July 23rd, 3:30pm.

Be sure your essay is double spaced with twelve point font
Some general points:
Be sure your essay has a thesis – a statement of what you will argue (the reader should be able to identify it as one of those conclusion statements). I highly recommend putting this in your first paragraph (speaking as such, your first paragraph should tell me what position you support and how you plan to support in the body of your essay. You may find it helpful to take your conclusion paragraph and make that your first paragraph).
In writing your paper you should think about your audience. In this case assume that your reader knows little about the theory you’re discussing and so you should take care to patiently, thoughtfully, and fairly present the views you consider. Be sure to clearly define any important terms or ideas that your reader might not recognize or that play a key role in understanding and justifying the argument. The reader should be able to identify the key or important premises to the view. You are evaluated partly on your ability to present the view you critically discuss as a coherent and plausible.
In the critical phase you should be thinking about the ways in which the argument(s) are convincing or not. You should think about the progression of ideas and whether they support that conclusions found in your explication. You might raise questions by posing thought examples or counter examples.
Use the APA referencing style for your paper
Be aware of what counts as plagiarism. Even accidental plagiarism (you know, the kind where you paraphrase without citing or where you accidentally quote without citing) will be reported.
