President Bill Clinton said that it was our job to convince people that “democracy and free markets can give all people the opportunity to live out their dreams.” President Bush argued something similar at the Free Trade of the America’s summit in Quebec City in 2001: “We have a great vision before us: a fully democratic hemisphere, bound together by good will and free trade. That is a tall order. It is also the chance of a lifetime. And it is the responsibility we share.” Presidents (and the World Trade Organization, the International Fund, and the World Bank), Democrat and Republican, since Carter in the 1970s have argued that we need to have Free Markets and Free Trade. This will lead to a better world, it will reduce poverty, and develop poorer nations. Based on the documentaries you watched and the readings in section 1. What do you think of this? Do free markets deliver the goods as these presidents claim it will?
Write a 5-page paper where you engage this discussion. First state the case for free trade and free markets. Assess the claims based on the readings by Mike Davis, Ha-Joon Chang, and the documentaries. Is free trade conducive to development in your view? That is to say, do you think that it is a good policy to be adopted by a government trying to generate economic development in their country?
