3rd and Final Paper: Urban Social Problem
Minimum 2 pages length. . Use the textbook and the other course materials primarily–NOT the internet–as your first source for research. Then, go to the LAGCC library research database for further sources. use short quotes, explicate them, and cite your sources, including the textbook.
Discuss ONE urban social problem that particularly concerns you. What are its effects, and what are its causes? For example:
Homelessness/housing displacement/gentrification
Segregation and poverty
Environmental racism
Police brutality: (driven by racism, or class oppression?)
Mass Transit problems
What is the impact of these problems upon society? How do liberals, vs. conservatives, vs. socialists, see the basis for the problem? (see esp. chapter 10 for this) Whom in our society does this problem affect most harmfully? Consider the role of capitalism, class conflict and exploitation, in causing this problem (Look at Chapters 3 and 6). And what role does racial conflict play (Look at Chapter 11)? How are the two conflicts related here for this problem? What is the role of corruption, and of business influence, in ensuring that the government does NOT solve this problem, does not even address it, or if it does, makes the problem worse (Look at Chapters 3 and 6)?
