The Research Process: Defining the Problem
The goal of evidence-based practice is to bring research to the bedside. Researchers replicate studies so that they can show that a practice change is needed. In order for the profession of nursing to continue to utilize evidence-based practice, all nurses need to become research consumers. Nurses must conduct and review research and facilitate practice changes in all areas of nursing practice.
You may think about the research process in terms of the nursing process.
· Assess – Define the problem- topics of staffing, leadership collaboration, poor management, or unsafe working environments
· Diagnose – Write the research question(s)- how to improve outcomes,
· Plan – Methods/Design
· Intervention – Making a change in practice
· Evaluation – Statistical and/or Qualitative analysis
In the first activity, you will work on identifying and defining a problem at your organization or in your practice. You will conduct a literature review. A literature review is used to gather all of the existing information on a particular topic. The literature review should provide evidence regarding the significance of the problem, and how the problem has and can impact nursing practice, patient and/or student outcomes, and global healthcare or educational environments. You will be asked to discuss at least three of the potential solutions and/or evidence-based guidelines that were used in the literature to address the problem. The literature review is important to determine the gaps that exist in the current body of knowledge. You will find, through your literature review, that the problem you have identified is not just a phenomenon at your organization or in your practice but exists in many areas of nursing practice.
In the final activity, you will be presenting a plan for an evidence-based research project. The evidence-based research project information is only a plan for research. You will not be implementing or evaluating any part of your plan.
For this activity, identify and define a problem at your organization or in your practice. Provide a review of at least 5 current peer-reviewed research articles that discuss and address the problem. Discuss how the problem you identified is similar to and different than what is discussed in the current body of knowledge. Provide evidence regarding the significance of the problem, and how the problem has and can impact nursing practice, patient and/or student outcomes, and global healthcare or educational environments. Discuss at least three of the potential solutions and/or evidence-based guidelines that were used in the literature to address the problem. Remember you are gathering the literature that will support an evidence-based research project
