The elements of editing (how shots are arranged, connected and choreographed) is another important element in a film maker’s arsenal. Indeed, this particular element’s importance cannot be under-estimated. A film comes to life (or dies) on the editing table. It creates the pace and forges the connections across the vast array of shots available after a shoot.
Use one of the following films as your target text — locate at your centers a copy of one of the following titles — Wild Bunch Part 1, (and Wild Bunch Part 2) , Rear Window; Jaws; Mad Max: Road Fury; The Birds (in vod form here) or locate on your own The Matrix or Quantum of Solace — locate good examples of the following and discuss their effects upon the film: the basic types of joins, examples of the 4 editing relations (graphic, rhythmic, spatial, temporal), continuity techniques (cuts on action, eye-line match cuts, consistency in light and composition, etc.), and the 180 degree rule’s operation. You will need to do some shot-by-shot breakdowns (of whole scenes or part of scenes) in order to pursue this activity. It is difficult to illustrate how editing works without reference to shot types and durations and how they connect in regards, for instance to graphic matches or mismatches, etc. Therefore, in discussing the editing elements, please refer to real shots and order of shots to make your illustration concrete.
The best way to organize this paper is to 1) briefly define editing, then 2) devote a section to joins, 3) to the 4 editing relations, and then 4) to continuity issues.
Be sure to be full and unpack your thinking as to how these selected scenes illustrate and demonstrate editing practices, and how they contribute to the film’s overall project or effect. Again, no need to retell the plot. Likewise, no need to summarize the principles in general — assume I know them. Your job is to analyze your chosen film’s editing. Please be sure to use the appropriate vocabulary as per element you discuss.
Once again, a good DVD player with pause, forward and reverse abilities, will be your best friend for this project.
