Pictures and Perceptions of Aging and the Older Adult

There are many changes that occur as we grow older. Demographic changes such as our living arrangements can be welcomed or challenging. Earlier in the course, you wrote about how as a healthcare professional, you felt about caring for the elderly. Now you will address that question from the perspective of the client. What principles might guide you? In this discussion, you will look at a situation as both the patient/client and the healthcare professional. For this activity, you will include a picture that speaks to how you personally feel about the elderly.
Include a picture that depicts how you feel about the elderly and write a paragraph (at least 5 sentences) that explains your feelings.
Think about how it must feel to be admitted to a long-term care/nursing facility. Imagine you are an older adult who is being admitted into a long-term care facility. (2 paragraphs)
Describe your feelings. Take into account any expected age-related changes that might be occurring, as well as cognitive, or psychosocial developmental changes.
Include at least one of the Factors to Consider in Selecting a Nursing Home that would be important to you when selecting a facility:
Costs: daily rate, insurance accepted, services available
Administration: ownership, accessibility of medical services
Philosophy of care: staff selection, accessibility of staff, approach to residents
Other services: speech therapy, physical therapy, social services, occupational therapy
If you were the elderly client, what personal attributes in a caregiver would be important to you?
Write 3 paragraphs (a paragraph has at least 5 sentences) responding to the questions above (1 paragraph for #1 and 2 paragraphs for #2). Make sure to use at least 1 example from the weekly lecture, assigned reading, or supporting materials.
