Write an essay exploring how ‘politics’ both contributes to the process of ‘development’ and is affected by its outcomes, according to the modernization theory. Along with the two course readings provided about modernization theory, the writer will have to find two SCHOLARLY articles which relate to the topic they will be writing about. All FOUR readings must be used in the essay and cited.
Your essay should address, at a minimum, the following questions: · Are ‘good politics’ and ‘strong’ political institutions the conditions for, or the outcome of, development? How are these terms defined and explained by the theoretical paradigm of development, and how does the paradigm see them contributing to successful development? · Is democracy necessary for development; is development necessary for democracy; or is there no necessary linkage between development and democracy? How is this relationship understood, and what are the implications of the paradigm’s arguments for social participation and national cohesion? · In what ways does politics outside the state figure in the theoretical paradigm’s assessment of national development? Are non-state interventions, structures, actors and relationships important in facilitating development; if so, how; and how critical are they to realising successful development? · Should the objectives of national politics, including governments and political parties, be to facilitate economic growth, consolidate political institutions and administrative capacity, or nurture social cohesion and equity? Are all three possible simultaneously; and should any of these objectives be prioritised as a key determining factor for the realisation of the others? · What contradictions, gaps or challenges are evident in the paradigm’s overall conceptualisation of the ‘politics’ of development?
