Discuss American politics in the 1970s. What were the primary successes and failures of Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and Jimmy Carter? What were the main events during the decade, both at home and abroad, that shaped American politics? How did politics of the 1970s set the stage for American politics in the 1980s?
Describe the rise of the “New Right” and the Presidency of Ronald Reagan. What was the “New Right,” and what led to its formation? How did it define conservatism? What were the primary issues during the Reagan years (again domestic and foreign)? How did this “New Right” work during the Clinton presidency?
Describe the ending of the Cold War and the aftermath in foreign policy. How did the Cold War end, and what contributed to its demise? What was the role of Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev? How did Cold War foreign policy contribute to the rise of terrorism? How has terrorism shaped American livelihood in the 21st Century?
“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” This famous quote from George Santayama may be controversial, but it tends to be more accurate than many of us would like. What political issues, trends, foreign policy issues, have you seen in this course are still just as much of an issue in modern politics? In looking at American politics in the 21st Century, how far have we as a society come? How far do we still have to go? Although you do not need to source modern events, you still need to use footnotes for the historical events from the course.
