Describe a time in your life or the life of someone you know when stress was not effectively managed. What happened as a result? Which of the above methods could have created a better outcome?
The American Institute of Stress reports that at least one in four Americans reports that work is the number one cause of stress in their lives, with more than 40% reporting that work is very or extremely stressful. Nearly another third of Americans say that interpersonal issues represent their most significant source of stress. Stress correlates with physical problems, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, decreased immune response, stomach problems, and trouble sleeping. In addition, excessive stress is associated with making people more irritable, sad, or anxious and may contribute to a decline in memory. Experts recommend a number of possible strategies to de-stress, including the following:
Get plenty of exercise – Exercise can relax the body and mind and improve mood. However, to achieve these benefits, experts suggest a minimum of 2.5 hours of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise per week.
Eat well – A balanced diet includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Eating well also means not skipping meals, which has been shown to decrease mood and add to people’s existing stress levels.
Enjoy a vacation or time-off – Planning a vacation with a relaxed itinerary and plenty of down-time can be a powerful de-stressor. Equally, making time for relaxation without traveling can also help to reduce the anxiety that accumulates in life.
Include a favorite hobby in your life – Everyone needs to set side aside time in their schedules for things they enjoy. Common hobbies that de-stress include reading, doing arts and crafts, watching movies or shows, doing puzzles, or playing games.
Talk about your problems with someone you trust – Talking with a friend, a family member, a trusted religious leader, a doctor, or a therapist can help to eliminate negative feelings and stress. It’s even possible to reduce stress by talking to yourself, as long as you are careful to be encouraging and positive with yourself.
Eliminate factors that trigger stress – Figuring out the biggest causes of stress in your life can make it possible to reduce or eliminate them. One way to identify these main causes is by keeping a “stress journal” to identify patterns that appear over time.
