This historic case study project requires you to examine a day in the life of an individual who lived in 19th century
America (1836-1877). You will research various sources to examine the lifestyles, environment, issues, and events that
man, woman or child experienced during the 19th century 1830s-1870s). To help you narrow the scope of this research
assignment, choose one of the individuals listed below and concentrate on a specific period of time. Your information
must correspond with the date and the individual you choose for this assignment. An example of a correct format is
available in your assignment folder.

Instructions:
I. Written Section: Research valid websites, books, articles, and other sources to discover how 19th
century Americans lived, worked, and died. Your written work will include the four areas listed below.
Your paper should be double-spaced, size 12 font. Please use a readable font such as Times New
Roman, Arial, or Calibri. Parenthetical citations are required—use MLA or APA format.
Include the following sections in your paper:
A. Personal Description:
Create a persona for your case study. Choose a name, age, social status, education, and physical
appearance that would correspond with the time frame you have chosen. Strive for authenticity!
B. Physical Environment:
Description of the environment experienced by the individual—mention specific dates, location, type
of home, living and working conditions, tools and technology, common health problems, etc.
C. Popular Culture : Description of the customs, traditions, popular music and dances, popular names, clothing styles,
religious beliefs, and /or courting customs, etc. Focus on three or four specific areas that correspond
with the social class, education, and age of your case study.
D. “Current” Issues : Describe the issues, political changes, and problems faced by the individual during the time frame
you have chosen. Mention the president, governor, generals, or other famous individuals that would
have been well known during the time period of your case study.
II. Illustrations: Find at least 4 photographs or illustrations that depict the era in which the individual lived.
The photographs may be included in the written sections or comprise a separate section.
III. Works Cited Page (Use MLA or APA format)
