Diane is a 22-year-old single woman who makes an appointment to see a psychology professional because she is having difficulty with her dating relationships. She recently lost her job and reports feeling “down” all of the time. Diane stated that when she feels “down” she would sometimes make cuts on her abdomen, as she enjoys the “release it provides.” She denied needing medical attention for any of the cuts. Diane very dramatically tells you all of the details about her relationship with her last boyfriend and at the end of her story begins crying wildly. When asked for some information about her family and friends, Diane tells you that her family has disowned her and she does not have any friends. She goes on to tell you that she is desperate and must have your help immediately. When asked about the use of any substances, Diane becomes defensive and says, “Of course I have a drink occasionally…..doesn’t everybody!”
Using information from our textbook, what would you expect to see in this patient’s assessment? What would the patient’s diagnoses be? What would a treatment plan look like for Diane? What symptoms would you want to reduce? What areas of strength may Diane improve upon? Would Diane be a candidate for a psychiatry consult for medications? Why or why not?
