Discuss the important events in the year 1981 and the impacts.

Have you ever stopped to think about what the world was like the year you were born and what major world/national events have far reaching effects into the present day? Through this project, you will have the opportunity to explore these questions. Over the next few weeks, you will be researching one main aspect (major news story, national or world event, etc) during the year you were born in order to explore the significance that your research choice played in history, as well as explore and analyze how it impacts our current society.
Some ideas to help you think about how to begin:
Inventions:
What were some main inventions that occurred the year you were born? Do we still use those inventions today or were they only a one-time deal?
What was their impact in the United States? All over the world?
Technology:
What were the latest technological advancements? Were there even laptop computers? What did cell phones look like? Did wireless Internet access even exist?
Medical:
What were some of the primary health concerns?
What were the main areas that were being researched?
What were the latest medical discoveries?
Political:
What were some of the political concerns?
Were we at war or thinking about going to war?
What were the main topics of discussion?
Was it an election year?
You will be expected to summarize, discuss, and analyze ONE major event that occurred in the year that you were born. Some of the questions you may want to explore in your research and analysis are:
What is the event that you are choosing to discuss in your research paper? Summarize the event for your audience and explain why you chose it.
Why was this event significant?
What society, nationally or globally or both, were impacted by this event?
How did this event impact society? And what are some lasting impacts from that event that can still be felt/seen today?
Why is an exploration of this event relevant today?
Remember that these are just some questions to consider when thinking about the focus of your research paper. You will be required to incorporate texts from the library databases into your paper, analyze those texts, incorporate them effectively into your paper, while still maintaining your own voice as a writer.
The purposes for this essay therefore are to 1) introduce to important aspects of writing a comprehensive research paper including using proper documentation (MLA citation), integrating sources, conducting effective library and internet research, and organizing larger papers; 2) further refining your ability to understand factors that affect your rhetorical situation such as your stance on a particular issue and your audience’s opinion about that issue.
Criteria:
1750-2000 Words.
Cite 6-8 references that you have researched. These can be books, magazines, newspapers, journals, etc that you can access via the Library Databases
Include a Works Cited Page and a Final Word Count at the end of the text
Follow correct MLA format. Be sure to refer to the MLA handbook, as well as the library handouts that can be located on the Library Home page
