Choose a country and answer the following questions:
5-15 pages
Use graphs where needed, at least a few required
a). Why you chose your country/What is interesting about the country or its economy
b). Micro Issues (I’ve only put this as one section, but can be quite substantial if you find lots of evidence of micro problems in your country of choice).
Are there any remarkable market failures that could be hurting productivity growth and development? These might include 1). Lots of monopolies or oligopolies, etc 2). Big Externality problems 3). Labor and or capital markets that are not allowed to adjust 4). Large tariffs, quotas, inefficiently collected taxes 4). Regulations that do not seem necessary 5). Lots of political corruption 6). Others you might read about.
Basically, think about the two core concepts of micro: Market Efficiency (the most important) and Productivity Growth. (providing more goods and services for less inputs).
Are there noteworthy Market Inefficiencies in your chosen country? They could be caused by the government. They could be non-competitive market structures. They could be public goods not provided. They could be externalities not internalized. They could be something else as well.
On the productivity front, is your chosen country a high, medium or low productivity country generally? Are there sectors more productive than others? What makes your country productive or not productive? Whether low or high in productivity, does your country have any productivity growth?
c). Basic measures of the country recently/GPD/Change in GDP/population/pop growth rate/inflation/unemployment/type of economy (main industries, main exports, etc)/trade balance/budget balance/any others you find interesting or relevant.
d). Short Run Macro Model
What is the situation of the country, be sure to sketch a graph
Have they tried monetary or fiscal policy recently? Did it seem effective?
Should they or can they use these policy tools in the near future?
e). Balance of Payments
Current Account + Capital Account add to 0 in all countries/ Discuss these 2 for your country and what it might mean?
*why might the balance be what it is for your country?
*you will only find data on the current account, but if current account is +$200B then capital account is -$200Billion, etc.
f). Long-Run Growth
How has the growth been in recent years?
Why Might it be fast or slow?
What do you recommend for future growth

Is the exchange rate fixed or flexible? Is the current situation a good idea?
How has the exchange rate changed in recent years? What may have caused these changes, graph please. Who controls your countries money supply?
h). National Income Accounting
Discuss whether the country has more savings or more investment? Use equations to show. What might have led to the situation in your country? Where does and should the country get more investment money?
i). Trade
What goods do they trade in? How might they benefit more from trade? Explain how trade helps your country? What costs are there to the country, if any, from trade?
j). Theories of Development
Does your country have a strategy? What do you recommend for their future
k). Equity in your country
*How is the gini coefficient in your country? A measure of inequality with 1 = most inequality, 0 = least.
