Sentence variety editing activity
First watch my Sentence variety video in this module and look at the Ways to vary sentence beginnings (also in this module). Then complete the instructions below.
1. Revise a paragraph of your draft to vary the structure, beginnings, and length of sentences. Include the new paragraph in your assignment.
2. How many words are in the longest and shortest sentences? (For comparison, in Provost’s paragraph the shortest “sentence” has one word, and the longest has fifty-four.)
3. Identify at least three different sentence structures in your paragraph (simple, compound, complex, or compound-complex). To help you identify the clauses, put subjects in ALL CAPS and underline the verbs. Put dependent clauses that can’t stand alone in italic
4. Identify at least four different kinds of sentence beginnings.
