The illness narrative

Each student will interview a person of their choosing, who has a chronic illness, such a genetic disorder, cancer, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, (I cannot chose chronic kidney disease), heart problems. The client you chose to interview may NOT be a client in your clinical practicum or a classmate. You are expected to interview consenting adult friends, relatives, or neighbors. The narrative should seek to capture the individual’s perspective of living with their illness, with all of its emotional, psychological, spiritual, and physical components. This narrative differs from a case study in that a case study focuses only on medical facts and response to treatment
On page one of your narrative; succinctly and accurately describe, in your own words, the pathophysiology of your client’s chronic illness, in 1 page or less. Then, go on to describe the etiology, pathogenesis, morphologic changes, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and clinical course of their illness. Use your textbook as well as medical and/or nursing articles as references. On the last page, contrast and compare the individual’s perspective of living with their chronic illness with your description of the Pathophysiology from your first page.
Good writing is important. Papers will be graded on the quality of the writing, the salience of the interviewee’s story, accurate descriptions of the pathophysiology of the interviewee’s chronic disease, your analysis of the interviewee’s story compared to what you expected it to be, and the scientific integrity of the content
The paper must be typewritten in 12-point font, and double-spaced
· Expected length will be 4-5 pages, excluding reference page
· References (2-3 expected) should be on separate page, and contain only what you have cited in the text of the paper
· Correct spelling and grammar are expected
