Purpose
The purpose of this final paper is to practice what we have learned this semester by applying our course material to the final chapter of Bertrand Russell’s Problems of Philosophy (1912), an essay titled “The Value of Philosophy.”
1) Determine what you believe Russell’s primary argument to be in this essay and construct this argument as a syllogism in one of the following formats: A sound deductive argument, an unsound deductive argument, a strong inductive argument, or a weak inductive argument (15 points).
2) Explain whether Russell’s epistemology is Rationalism or Empiricism and give evidence for your response (15 points).
3) Determine what you believe Russell’s primary ethical argument is from this essay (that is, what does he imply we “should” do as a result of his argument) and explain which ethical theory you believe he is utilizing (15 points).
4) Finally, explain any other argument or information from this essay which relates to the course information from weeks one, five, six or seven (15 points).
Form
1) The paper needs to be between 1750-2000 words (10 points).
2) The paper needs to be composed using proper spelling, grammar, sentence structure, and paragraph structure (10 points).
3) The paper need to be formatted according to Turabian rules, with footnotes, bibliography, font, margins, etc. all conforming to Turabian guidelines (20 points).
