‘Social media is a threat to democracy.’

Create a PowerPoint presentation on the following topic statement:

‘Social media is a threat to democracy.’
Must address the following in your PowerPoint presentation:
• Develop a clear and substantiated position to the topic statement. You are strongly advised to articulate this position in your
introduction slide. In your introduction slide, please state your group’s response in a
sentence or two and briefly explain how the evidence presented in your deck of slides
substantiate that response.

o For example, ‘Our group agrees with the statement because of
Reasons 1, 2 and 3, as we will demonstrate with the evidence that we have
gathered.’
o Another example: ‘Our group feels that that the issue is more complicated than
that presented by the statement for the following reasons (outline briefly),
which are elaborated further in the presentation.’

o Please note that a ‘clear and substantiated position’ is not the same as a ‘forced
consensus’ position.

• Examine and discuss evidence that supports your response to the topic
statement.
o This section is where the group fleshes out the reasons briefly stated in the
introduction slide with relevant and detailed examples in a coherent fashion,
preferably based on a diverse range of sources.
Moreover, the group’s
examination and discussion of the evidence must engage with both of the
following themes:
a) How and why social media companies maximize user engagement
b) Surveillance capitalism
o Please note that engagement with the above two themes is compulsory.

Beyond this, you may also engage with other ideas, themes, and concepts that are
relevant to the topic statement and necessary for the articulation of your group’s
position.

Develop a clear and coherent presentation in visually appealing slides that adhere to
the stated style guidelines. Your group should ensure that there is a good balance
between text and graphics in the slides.

Style guidelines:
• Minimum font size 14 for text in PPT slides.
• Your presentation should not have more than 12 slides (excluding the bibliography
slide(s) and cover slide).
• Please include an introduction slide, a conclusion slide, and bibliography slide(s).
• Please include in-text citations and a bibliography of references used by the group.
