NUMBERING AND QUESTIONS: To format your assignment, please make sure to number your responses/answers to each question. DO NOT include the original question, but please label each question as #1, #2 etc., so it is clear which question you are answering.
The writing portion is based on the reading and the documentary.

Question One- SUMMARIZE: John Brown and Dred Scott
First, please note that John Brown and Dred Scott are two topics that have been written about endlessly. Do not use any outside sources—stick with the film, the article, and your textbook. If you use outside sources without prior approval, you will receive a zero for the assignment.
Write at least one paragraph that answers the following:
What are your thoughts about John Brown’s actions? Consider all of his activities in Kansas, the raid on Harpers Ferry and his time in prison before he is executed.
What is John Brown’s philosophy regarding violence as a means to end slavery? What are your thoughts about John Brown’s ideals and philosophy?
Write at least one paragraph that explains the Dred Scott decision AND its outcome and impact.
According to the film, what is the Dred Scott decision and why is it significant?
According to the film, what was the impact of the Dred Scott decision upon free blacks and abolitionists in the United States?
Question Two- EVALUATION: Abraham Lincoln’s Progression, Flip-Flop or Political Evolution, The Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th Amendment
Have you heard the term flip-flopper? It is generally associated with a politician who changes his/her/they view on a topic or issue in order to gain votes or popularity. It is considered an insult. However, many politicians do indeed undergo political evolutions throughout their careers, as they change and as society changes. Should we critique someone who undergoes an honest change of heart to become more open to, for example, increased rights for free blacks, as Lincoln did? When is it flip-flopping and when it is an honest changing of one’s mind?
Your response should be at least two paragraphs. In your answer, address the following:
Abraham Lincoln is remembered as the great emancipator. However, as the documentary points out, he attempted to end the Civil War without ending slavery. Did you know this fact before watching the film? The article explains Lincoln’s shifts as more of a political evolution than flip-flopping. Do you think he was a flip-flopper or that he evolved? Explain your response.
What are your thoughts about Lincoln and how he is perceived in the U.S.? Have your views changed after consulting these sources? Explain your response.
