Briefly discuss what led to the rule of the “Thirty Tyrants” and the effect this rule had on Athens.

Paragraph 1: “Thirty Tyrants” in fact is the name of a government. After the Peloponnesian
War, the king of Sparta, Lysander, occupied Athens and established an
oligarchic government in Athens, which protected by Sparta.
Thirty Tyrants has a very big impact on Athens. The influence of the Thirty
Tyrants is mainly to end the democratic government in Athens and accelerate

aristocracy of power, but also reduced the power of the executive. Moreover,
he made the general assembly have the right of legislation, justice and
executive. Although he was murdered because of his reform, the reform was
continued by his successor, Pericles. Pericles followed the Ephilaltic’s reform
and expanded the scope of citizen participation in politics, re-organized the
citizen assemblies and 500 member meeting, and required male over the
age of 20 join these meetings. These reforms increased people’s
opportunities to participate in politics and made the development of
democracy in Athens to its peak
