Our first couple of writing assignments for this class are meant to help you break down the research process step-by-step. I provide you with a couple of resources in the Module to guide your commentary but feel free to take on the subject of the paper however you like. For example, this paper will be about your own thoughts regarding library research and evaluation of sources.
Why do you think we (in college and university) focus on library database research (secondary research) and/or quantitative research rather than book reports, interviews, or opinion pieces (primary research)?
What apprehensions do you have about doing secondary research?
How do you evaluate your sources for reliability? How do you know you can trust what you are reading or viewing?
You have the rest of the week to complete this assignment, so take your time. I highly encourage you to meet with your classmates (on-campus or via zoom) to bounce ideas off of one another. Don’t overthink the assignment; at its core, this is just a first-person opinion piece… but I want you to consider the sources I have provided and comment on these in addition to sharing your own ideas and opinions.
Criteria for Essay
Must be in MLA format. No exceptions (you should have covered this in detail in ENGL 1301)
Must be at least TWO pages in length – do not attempt to get around this by widening margins, making extra-large spaces between paragraphs, or other such nonsense. Not only do these things not work, but I take them personally insulting (as in “My professor is dumb enough to fall for this”).
You must reference the sources provided in the Module (you do not have to directly quote, and if you do, you do not have to use MLA in-text citation since we will cover that next week)
