Whereas Kierkegaard says that the free individual affirms their freedom by embracing a form of religious faith, Nietzsche says that the free individual affirms their freedom by rejecting a form of religious faith. How similar, or how different, are the resulting notions of the free individual, and is one approach preferable to the other?
a. Possible focuses:
i. Kierkegaards and Nietzsches understandings of faith
ii. (a) Kierkegaard on the individual vs. the universal, and (b) Nietzsche on the individual vs. the herd
iii. Kierkegaards figure of Abraham and Nietzsches figure of Zarathustra
For this analysis I would like to focus on these aspects from each philosopher. ii. (a) Kierkegaard on the individual vs. the universal, and (b) Nietzsche on the individual vs. the herd.
The specific readings are in the book: Basic Writings of Existentialism by Gordon Marino
I am also attaching the assignment instructions to this.
