Discussion: Ethical Issues in the Human Genome
This week’s discussion topic is about the ethical issues surrounding DNA technology. Genetic technology has given us the ability to alter the genes of a developing fetus and create, in effect, custom-made babies.
Pick ONE ethical issue from one of the questions below, create a newspaper editorial (about two to three paragraphs) and post it for your peers to agree or disagree about your views and then respond to two of your peers. Remember to cite the website and articles you use to support your opinions (APA style).
Ethical Questions:
Should gene technology be used for gene therapy? Why or why not?
Should gene technology be used for gene enhancement? Why or why not?
Who should decide? Parents? Doctors? Government? Society? Someone else?
Should screening for diseases or defects be allowed when there is no cure or treatment? Why or why not?
If all newborns are going to be screened, should parents have a chance to refuse? Why or why not?
Should an insurance company be allowed to make decisions based on medical information from a person’s DNA? Why or why not?
What are some of the arguments for and against “designer babies?”
Choose one argument against using new technological discoveries to modify or control human genetic inheritance, and provide a counter-argument.
Choose one argument for using new technological discoveries to modify or control human genetic inheritance, and provide a counter-argument.
What is your position on “babies by design?” Explain your stance.
