Discuss your ideas about how films engage social concerns and have lasting effects on society.

As you have learned in this class, film is a far-reaching medium with the potential to affect the greater fabric of our culture. Our understanding this potential and our ability to analyze it reach far beyond just this medium and into all areas of our social structures and culture. For example, the practice of closely analyzing particular films, which you have honed in this course, is the same practice of analysis which you will find in other courses—or in learning any new skill.

Write (due Thursday, Day 3)
Based on the films you have watched and the ways you have learned to interpret meaning in them, discuss your ideas about how films engage social concerns and have lasting effects on society. Pick a film (or films) as evidence of this dynamic and describe the social and cultural resonance you see.
You must use at least two outside sources, in any combination of embedded video clips, still photos, or scholarly sources. All sources should be documented in APA style
Guided Response (due Monday, Day 7): Respond substantively (150 to 175 words) at least two classmates who referenced different films than those you have chosen. In your responses, compare the film you discussed as having a lasting effect on society with the films noted in your classmates’ posts. Provide support for your position. Substantive responses use theory, research, experience, and/or examples to support ideas and elaborate on the discussion topic.

Greetings Class, and Dr. Evans,
Throughout this course, I have learned to identify the title, writer, director, major actors, and the year of the film’s release. The importance of summarizing the story in one sentence and summarizing the plot of the film is about five sentences. the sequence of events. The meanings of several techniques that directors, produces use, and are known for within the film industry. Most importantly learning the history of filmmaking and the genres of films, such as romantic comedy, musical, biography, Horror, and lighting, sound effects are used in films that assist in expanding the possibilities of the audience.
As I reflect during this course, the first film I selected was “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”; is a classic and is in the genre of Romantic Drama. The plot in this film is based on a story of an interracial couple Joanna Drayton, who was a 23-year-old white woman, and Dr. John Prentices a 37-year-old black male who was a widower. Being able to identify who was the director by Stanley Kramer and written by William Rose. The major actors within this film were Spencer Tracey, Sidney Poitier, and Katharine Hepburn, and learning that the film featured Hepburn’s niece Katharine Houghton, and when was the film released (December 1967). It is from my perspective that this film reached far beyond challenges and influenced the greater fabric of our culture today.
During the course learning what mise-en-scenes meaning the setting or surroundings of an event or action., and the practice of how important lighting is in making a film. Also, as I am watching a “Hallmark” channel I find myself looking for the elements of character development. Asking myself, is this actor/actress style being natural according to the principal actors? Which actor is bringing realness to the story, this is the type of method that allows the audience to get to know the character(s)?
As I reflect on my second choice of the film “Hidden Figures”. As analyzing the real-life story of Katherine Johnson. This film is evidnce of dynamic in the challenges that Katherine had to endure in real life situations. The social and cultural resonancewithinthe score of the music made it vibrated largely for the audience to feel the intensitiy of what occurres wihtin the 1960’s. today this film is an refection and is an inspiration of hope in ones challenges to succeed today. The directors must have known the potential of this film, and they were able to identify this story on film . which resonated into all areas of social structures and cultural character(s). The introduction of the film course has enlightened my skill to closely analyze films from identifying the genre, recognizing the lightning, the sounds effects, and identifying who is the directors.

Titanic is a movie that definitely has a social impact in many areas. Here are a few examples, lifeboats, iceberg monitoring, and the rich and the poor.
In the movie, they did not have lifeboats for all the passengers on the ship. This caused the staff to ask for women and children first. In the current times, this changed the way ships operate. From the NY Times, “After the Titanic sank, rules were changed to require every vessel to include enough lifeboat space for every person on board, according to the Merchant Shipping Advisory Committee at the time” (Bitette, 2015).
Iceberg monitoring was another game-changer from the actual event that happened in the movie. Iceberg monitoring was not normally monitored closely, if at all. After the incident, a new safety patrol was formed. As stated in this article, “The International Ice Patrol was established to warn ships of icebergs in the North Atlantic shipping lanes and to break up ice” (Tikkanen, 2021).
Also, in this tragic event, it was noted that the rich and the poor were treated differently. The stats show that the lower class died a lot more than the wealthy. Everyone deserves the same opportunity to live; it should not matter if your financial status.
