Based on the course content from week 3, answer any 5 of the following questions (each question is worth 2 points).
In addition to the course content, where appropriate, you may also draw on your personal experience, observations and other relevant sources information to provide an adequate response to each question.
Your response to each question must be about one full page (double spaced) or 500-700 words/question.
1. Discuss salient features of ethnicity as an aspect of cultural diversity in the US.
2. Bases on this week’s course material, discuss at least two important changes (conceptual, political, economic, cultural, etc.) as regards how ethnicity affects a person’s life in the US society at present and/or historically.
3. Based on A. Goodman’s article (and other course materials), explain why or how understanding race and racism as sociopolitical realities that have biological consequences is a new and radical biocultural agenda.
4. Critically assess the argument that race is not a useful shorthand for human variation (or difference).
5. After explaining what is meant by cultural construction of race, compare OR contrast cultural constructions of race in the US and in Brazil.
6. By using some ethnographic examples, discuss how religion serves as a basis of identity, organization and common activity in the contemporary United States.
7. Critically discuss how religion could be understood as a ‘double- edged sword’ (e.g., both units and divides or as a source of peace and cause of conflict, etc.) in a culturally diverse society such as the US historically and/or at present.
