Spend some time reviewing the literature about student rights, such as:
NSBA (National School Board Association) information on student rights: https://www.nsba.org/Advocacy
(Links to an external site.)
ACLU pages on student rights: http://www.k12.wa.us/GeneralInfo/EnrollmentOptions.aspx

and http://www.aclu-wa.org/

Based on your reading, and your own interests, pick a topic that you’d like to understand more in depth, e.g., students’ free speech rights, students’ religious rights, students’ rights to be free from unreasonable search and seizure of their cellphones, backpacks, etc.
Using the above resources, the resources listed elsewhere in this course shell, and your own web-searching abilities, find at least two court cases that relate to your topic. At least one of the cases should be applicable to students/schools in Washington State, meaning that at least one case should have been ruled upon by a court in Washington, a federal Ninth Circuit circuit or the United States Supreme Court.
Submit a 2-3 page paper, 4-7 pane Power Point with notes, Prezi or Excel spreadsheet which discusses the two (or more) cases you reviewed and explains how they illustrate important principles of student rights and the schools’ ability to discipline students. You must include citations for the cases that you reviewed, and the other more general research which you undertook.
