In “The Case for Reparations,” “The Nuns Who Bought and Sold Human Beings,” and How To Survive A Plague, we see longstanding institutions confronted with their own history of perpetuating structural injustices, marginalization, and displacement. What specific factors or forces were influencing these organizations’ past and/or present-day behaviors? How would you describe the relationship between these forces and the characteristics of formal organizations described by theorists in our readings?
Organizations are formed around a mission, and they evolve over time in response to the shared values, communication patterns, expectations, traditions, and rituals of the people who carry out their work. Despite good intentions, however, human service organizations are not immune from other forces that have shaped U.S. history, including racism, sexism, homophobia, and classism.
Question 2b
B. For social work and human service agencies, the intersection of organizational culture and cultural diversity represents both a powerful barrier and an equally powerful opportunity for growth and transformation. Drawing on and synthesizing the major theories characterizing organizational change, cultural responsiveness, and multicultural development, propose a step-by-step strategy for carrying out change in an organizational setting that addresses, but is not limited to, the following considerations:
Survival/sustainability
Power differences (internal and external)
Patterns of communication
Measures of effectiveness
Conflict
Incorporate evidence from your course readings, learning activities, and any additional relevant sources to support your model.
A. Compare and contrast how the theories of organizational culture and structure presented in our readings explain the relationship between organizations and their environments. In your response, give consideration to the interactions between an organization’s internal environment (i.e., structure, leadership, management, staffing, programs, communication, workplace politics) and its external environment (i.e., monetary and nonmonetary resources, referral relationships, regulatory bodies, agency partners, relationship with the community).

Question 3a
Kirst-Ashman and Hull (2019) characterize communities as “entities where citizens can organize or be organized in order to address mutual concerns and improve their overall quality of life.”
A. Using McKnight’s (1997) theory on associational care and asset-based community development, select a culturally-informed, context-specific macro intervention strategy (i.e. legislative, organizational, group and/or community level) and describe how it can be applied to the concerns raised in each of the following communities:
ACT UP (How to Survive a Plague)
Harper High School (This American Life)
South African church and refugee families (‘Encountering the Other Across the Divides’)
What indicators would you use to assess your strategy’s effectiveness for empowering these communities in a way that is consistent with McKnight’s vision? To what extent might your strategy still resemble a more traditional “systems” model?
Question 3b
Kirst-Ashman and Hull (2019) characterize communities as “entities where citizens can organize or be organized in order to address mutual concerns and improve their overall quality of life.”
B. One macro-level challenge faced by social workers is how to integrate human services into the process of community transformation. Several of our readings describe communities whose members have historically experienced systemic displacement, repression, and violence in U.S. society. Using our course readings and activities, the Social Work Code of Ethics, and the Grand Challenges for Social Work, write a theory-informed definition of “social justice” as an observable (and potentially measurable) construct for guiding social work practice. In your response, name the specific structural conditions that you are targeting for change, give examples of professional activities that would be consistent with your definition, and describe in practical terms how you will look for evidence of the profession’s progress toward ending racism, sexism, poverty, and other structural injustices
Question 4a
As Kirst-Ashman and Hull (2019) have noted, “The international macro environment affects every citizen on earth.” To practice effectively, social workers must continue to develop, refine, and apply an understanding of the global context to their areas of practice.
A. Describe the concept of globalization and cite specific examples of its influence on the groups, organizations, and communities we have examined in this course. With consideration for your definition, what does it mean to adopt a “human rights” perspective in the context of everyday social work practice?
Question 4b
As Kirst-Ashman and Hull (2019) have noted, “The international macro environment affects every citizen on earth.” To practice effectively, social workers must continue to develop, refine, and apply an understanding of the global context to their areas of practice.
B. Compare and contrast the theories of Community Development, Social Development, and the Capabilities Perspective. Taken collectively, what do these theories signify about the major sources of strife and upheaval in the lives of social work’s clients and their communities? In your opinion, how do macro-level approaches relate to the professional values and principles outlined in the Social Work Code of Ethics?
