Part A: (20 points)
In preparation for the Summative Part B Assignment, you are required to submit 3-5 sentences clearly defining the focus of your church visit experiences. One of these sentences should be a working thesis statement.
This pre-work should reveal that you have done some significant research in preparation for completing the Summative Part B Assignment. You may wish to research the type of congregation or faith group you have chosen to visit. In addition, you may also look for articles which discuss culture and spiritual development.
This assignment is due Tuesday, August 17th 10 PM PST. instructor will provide feedback on the statement, incorporate the feedback into your final Summative Part B Assignment.

Instructions: (180 points)
One of the best ways to understand layers of culture is to experience the traditions of a group which is very different from your own. For this project, attend two (2) faith services associated with a culture completely different from your own (I am Asian American – Choose other than an Asian Group). For example, students could attend a Russian Orthodox service, a Jewish Messianic service, a Japanese or Chinese service, a Coptic Church of Egypt service, an Ethiopian, or a Korean service.
You are not limited to Christian Churches. Be sure to be culturally sensitive; if you have any questions or concerns, please call ahead to check if you will be welcomed (i.e., in some traditions females may not sit with males, and some churches require skirts and/or head coverings for women). Please note: A Catholic Church service, which while it may denominationally different, is not considered culturally different for the purposes of this assignment.
After attending the services, please write a 700 word response paper for each visit. These response papers should both describe your subjective experience of the service, and explain how your experience may have been impacted by material presented in class.
Throughout each response paper, you must be sure to tie your discussion to the concepts discussed in this course, and demonstrate thoughtful analysis (you should have specific concepts and citations throughout each paragraph in each paper). Be thorough on this – the instructor is looking for notable learning to occur.
Paper guidelines
Length: 1500 words, double-spaced, excluding the cover page and reference pages, formatted in APA style.
Voice: You may use the first person voice for this paper since it is a personal reflection of your cross-cultural experience, however, you must remember to use evidence-based sources to support the points you are making. Please refer to bullet on references.
Cover Page containing: Your Name, Course Number and Name, Instructor’s, Name, and Date.
References: Cite at least six (6) sources from your texts including additional sources.
Documentation: All sources must be documented on a separate reference page, using APA format.
RUBRIC 180 Points.
1. Project Organization – Project demonstrates strong, in-depth reflection regarding church visit experience with sophisticated critique tying the student’s experience to course concepts. Clear evidence of critical thinking. – 60 points
2. Length – 1400 words – 700/ Faith Service
3. Synthesis and Course Outcomes – Clearly synthesizes at least three of the course outcomes in completing the project, and displays excellent understanding and use of significant concepts/
ideas presented in the course – 40 Points
4. Use of References – Compelling integration of multiple sources which add depth to the student’s analysis of the church visit experience. Breadth of resources used shows effort and sophisticated understanding of the concepts/ideas chosen. – 30 Points
5. APA Format – APA style is accurate. – 10 Points
6. Project Structure/ Writing Mechanics – Excellent skill in developing a project with a logical and coherent structure. Project clearly presents important insights.
Uses mature writing techniques. – 10 Points
7. Grammar, Spelling, Punctuation – No grammar, spelling and/or punctuation errors.
