Essay Option #1; Deviance and Social Control—Term Paper
For this paper, papers must be 7 pages in length (NOT including cover page or bibliography) and the format should be double spaced with 1” margins and in 12-point Times New Roman font. Papers should include a cover page that clearly states your name, the name of the course, the title of your paper, and which essay option you have chosen (i.e., Essay Option #1) Please also include a bibliography page at the end of your paper with a complete list of all sources cited in your paper cited in APA format (readings from Canvas, websites, and all additional books and articles). All papers must make use of and properly cite a minimum of 5 FIVE resources, THREE of which MUST be academic in nature (academic studies published in academic journals or books published by academic publishers). This assignment will be run through the Veri Cite plagiarism-detection system. When you reference any of your relevant sources or class lectures with either a quote or when you paraphrase something, you MUST properly CITE your sources. You must use the APA citation format to cite your sources and to write your bibliography.

OPTION ONE: EXPLAINING DEVIANCEFROM OPPOSING PERSPECTIVES
Choose a recent high-profile story of deviance from the news. This could be an act of STREET CRIME, the illegal or immoral behavior of someone with political power, a white-collar financial crime, a deviant subculture that has recently gained notoriety, etc. In your paper, you will discuss one positivist theory and one societal reaction/critical theory that could be applied to understand this case—and discuss which one of these you find most useful or convincing. Based on the theory that you find most convincing; you will suggest how this theory can be used to guide a response to this act/type of act. Your paper should address the following:
1- Describe the deviance you’re analyzing: What is the behavior/phenomenon/group? Is it associated with specific norms, values, ideologies, individuals, or forms of power? Explain.

2- Which ONE of the positivist theories that we have learned about seems applicable to this case? How would a positivist study the act/topic that you chose? What questions would they ask and what would be their approach to answering them?

3- Which ONE of the societal reaction critical theories that we have learned about seems applicable to understanding this case? How would societal reaction or critical theorist approach the topic that you chose? And HOW would the questions they ask, and the sources of data they use, differ from a positivist theorist?

4- Of the Three Specific Theories you have applied to the case, which do you find most convincing/useful for understanding the phenomenon? Why?

5- Drawing on the theory you find most convincing, how can this theory be used to guide the way that we respond (or do not respond) to this deviant act? Our case or topic that we will write about is “STREET CRIMES”.

Your total response in this assignment should be 7 pages and please draw on CONCEPTS AND THEORIES from the textbook the attachments when writing your response.
