Settlements in eighteenth century Texas depended on farming and ranching for survival and trade with other Spanish colonies. During the 1700s, colonists developed an extensive cattle and sheep ranching industry. They drove herds to other parts of New Spain and to Louisiana. During this period, Tejanos created the foundation of ranching culture in Texas.
