morant Bay Rebellion

The Morant Bay Rebellion happened on 11 october 1865, this happened in southeastern Jamaica. The Article “ Morant Bay Rebellion” illustrates the several hundred of black people marched into the town of Morant Bay the capital of the Predominantly sugar- growing parish of St. Thomas in the East. By the end of this protest the subsequent repression by British forces and by the Jamaican Maroons resulted in the deaths of nearly 500 blacks. Also the crowd had killed eighteen people and wounded thirty one others. The main characters in the event and the leader of the rebellion that was led by a man called Paul Bogle, he was a small landowner living in Strong Gut also George W. Gordon, c. a Jamaican national hero expulsion from the local vestry . Addition to that, the main reason for the Morant Bay Rebellion was the lack of Justice in the parish. According to the Article, “ because the poor black had no justice in St. Thomas in the East . . . there was no other way to get satisfaction in St. Thomas in the East, only what they had done” (Heuman, p. 268). This shows that black people have no justice among society and they are differently from the people of St. Thomas. As heuman describes that black people have the issue of wages especially, the law wages on the sugar estates of the parish. In addition to the law wages, there was the problem of land. Black people have to pay rent of their own land because there was a belief that the provision grounds away from the estates belonged to the people and not to the estates. On the other hand, there was positive evidence that the author used to illustrate how black people tried to develop their own society.
