Self- Determination Theory
Ø Meaning
is the felt sense of living one’s life in a meaningful, fulfilling, and
satisfying way and/or feeling that one’s life has a purpose—a set of goals.
(Weinstein, Ryan, & Deci)
Ø People
have an inherent drive toward self-organization and psychological integration—
manifested in intrinsically motivated activities and the internalization of
ambient social practices—what I want to do is informed by what needs to be done
Ø Needs
for: Competence, Relatedness, Autonomy
(Satisfaction of these needs leads to psychological integration and the
experience of meaningfulness in one’s life)
· Holland’s Person- Environment Theory
Ø Holland’s
Person- Environment Fit theory: A person-environment theory • Legacy of Frank
Parsons • The matching paradigm • A better fit will improve outcomes •
Occupational choice is an expression of personality
Ø Six personality types—consistent
across gender and culture • Realistic: asocial, genuine, practical, uninsightful— likes
jobs such as mechanic, surveyor, electrician, outdoor work • Investigative: analytical, cautious,
intellectual, introspective—likes jobs such as biologist, chemist, medical
technologist • Artistic:
complicated, emotional, expressive—likes jobs such as musician, interior
decorator, actor/actress
·
Social:
cooperative, empathic, kind, helpful— likes jobs such as counselor, teacher,
speech therapist • Enterprising:
adventurous, extroverted, ambitious, optimistic—likes jobs such as salesperson,
manager, business executive • Conventional: careful, conforming, methodical—likes jobs such as bookkeeper,
financial analyst, banker
·
People are a combination of types • Self-directed search—subtypes are top
three scores—e.g., RAS is a subtype • Work environments can also be described in
terms of types and subtypes based on the personalities of the people who work
in those environments—people create environments
·
Basic constructs • Congruence—degree of fit
between person and work environment • Consistency—internal harmony of subtype
scores • Differentiation—distinctness of profile
·
Hollands Theoretical constructs = Congruence •
SIA type fits SIA environment; Consistency
·
Planned Happenstance Theory
Ø Chance
or luck plays a big role in what happens in life
Ø You
can behave in ways to maximize chance happening
Ø You
can enhance your potential to respond to chance or luck when it does happen
Ø Rational
planning only goes so far
Ø Principles
of planned happenstance: 1st basic principal- take ( agentic) action
to generate opportunities, exploration versus taking action, put multiple sails
out there in the world, fundamentally grounded in contextualism and social
constructionism , 2nd basic principal skill enables you to take
advantage of opportunities which offer two ways to think of skills . 1 way is a
tool kit , 2nd way is a set of personality traits such as curiosity,
persistence, flexibility, optimism, risk- taking
