No matter which medical problem you choose to investigate, understanding the relationship between stress and the body is essential. Consider the following case studies to help you understand how to apply the theories of stress and coping in real life situations.
Case Study 1
Henry is a 55-year-old postal worker. He and his wife have been married for 30 years and have three grown children who have married and moved out of town. Henry and his wife, Lorita, have a close relationship, are comfortable with each other, and share many of the same leisure activities. Because of his job responsibilities and his satisfaction with his home life, Henry has not really cultivated many friendships outside his family.
One day, Henry returns from work and finds his wife wandering through the house, disoriented and in a state of physical disarray. She barely recognizes Henry, who can convince her to go the hospital with him. The emergency room staff determines that Lorita has had a stroke. Lorita recovers from the stroke, but never really appears to be the same. For example, she is unable to care for the house and Henry because she needs someone to care for her.
Case Study 2
Sarah is a 30-year-old mother of two children who works as an administrative secretary for a small company. Since her divorce, she has taken charge of her family and provides most of the emotional and economic support. Recently, Sarah’s company downsized, and she has been asked to work longer hours than before, taking over some of the job responsibilities of people who were terminated from their jobs. Not only is she working longer hours, but also, she is being asked to do tasks that she has not been trained to do. Sarah would like to take additional training to keep up with the demands, but she feels torn between spending time with her family, putting in overtime on the job, and having to retrain to increase her skills. She is worried that in this competitive job market if she doesn’t keep up, she will be replaced by someone with better skills and more time to devote to the company.
Analyze these case studies by answering the following questions:
According to the model of stress put forth by Lazarus, which type of stress would Henry and Sarah likely suffer from the incidents noted in each case study? Explain your answer fully.
What impact might Henry’s stress have upon his physical health? What about Sarah’s situation might affect her health?
What techniques are known to help individuals to cope with and alleviate stress as presented in the case studies?
