Essay 1 Directions
1. You are to evaluate a career that interests you. If you already have done this recently for another class such as ENG095, please choose a specific field of that career or a different career altogether, whatever will give you the most benefit.
2. The essay will need to be at least 800 words (3 1/2 pages) if in ENG101A and at least 1,000 words (4 pages) if in ENG101.
At least two and a half to three pages will give an evaluation of the career (giving facts, explaining the ins and outs of the career). The third page will be a personal reflection where you discuss how the career will or will not fit your life (more information below.
3. Your thesis should be your paper’s central argument. It needs to go at the end of your introduction. It CANNOT use first person.
4. For source support you need to use the bls.gov
(Links to an external site.)

5. You will use bls.gov
(Links to an external site.)
website to come up with the “Quick Facts” about your career choice. You must include this chart in your essay. If you do include the chart, please use this page to help you format the in-text citation and the chart itself in proper MLA format. The chart should include at least these items:
Job Title
Quick Facts
Median Pay National
Median Pay Arizona
Education Needed
Number of Jobs (in most recent year)
Job Outlook (future)
Similar Jobs
6. Your evaluation of your career should answer some or all of the following questions, but should not be limited to these:
What education do you need (or not need) in order to become it?
What is the starting salary? Average salary? High salary?
What is the job? What does it involve? How many hours a day, a week?
Do you work with people or alone?
What is the market for the career like right now? What will it look like in the future; in other words, will there be a need for it?
What equipment must you operate? What should you know before applying for a job?
Are internships possible to learn it?
The final page of your paper can focus on the career for you personally (so, yes, you can use “I” in the second half).
Why do you think this would be a good career for you?
Could you do this career until you retire?
Would you want to move up in this career? If so, how?
What goals would you set while in the career?
What would be important to you while working this career?
Does the career support your martial and family goals too?
How will the career help you as a person? How will it help you better your community and world?
While these questions should be looked at and answered, do not simply list facts. Your paper must flow smoothly with clear transitions and thoughts. Make sure you have a catchy introduction and a solid conclusion. Answer the questions using vivid adjectives, adverbs, verbs, and nouns. I want to understand everything there is to understand about your career. I should not be left with any unanswered questions.
7. Each body paragraph should have support from the text you are discussing and/or the outside source along with In-Text Citations IN MLA FORMAT. You also will need a WORKS CITED page IN MLA FORMAT at the end of the paper.
