Two Discussion Board.
Creation Stories and Culture. Compare the creation stories–Iroquois, Navajo, Old
Testament. Discuss a few of the significant ways in which they are
alike and different. Then look closely at the ways in which the two Native
American creation stories are parables or teaching stories, carrying
important cultural information and ethical instruction. Select one
aspect of each of the two stories and explain how it gives moral
guidance. (For example, the passage in which babies are lighting
up in their cradles illustrates the idea that kids shouldn’t smoke.)
Casas. Discuss Casas’s persuasiveness. Talk about some
of the techniques he uses to persuade his readers that he is telling the
truth.
Cabeza de Vaca, Discuss some
of the customs de Vaca encounters. Describe two or three
surprising customs; then try to explain why they might be adaptive–that
is, logical, useful, however strange they may seem to us.
Harjo. What
exactly does Harjo propose in her Newsweek essay?
