This is a course that is primarily about Euro-American style
classical music, beginning around 1600 and continuing until today, with short
trips to elsewhere around the world.
Hermann Hesse,
in
his 1943 novel The
Glass Bead Game,
wrote the following:
“The
human attitude of which classical music is the expression is always the same;
it is always based on the same kind of insight into life and strives for the
same kind of victory over blind chance. Classical music as gesture signifies
knowledge of the tragedy of the human condition, affirmation of human destiny,
courage, cheerful serenity.”
What Hesse is essentially saying is that the deep thoughts
of humanity can only be expressed through classical music, as opposed to

Note that Hesse isn’t talking about the lyrics, meaning the
words of a song, but about the music itself.
Hesse also isn’t talking about classical music as opposed to any
of the other arts, such as painting or poetry or architecture, just classical
music as opposed to popular music.
