What do you consider to be the most effective approach to establishing and enforcing standards for health information?

Discussion
Key Players in the Standards Development Process

Standards for the representation and classification of health information can be developed or mandated by a number of private- and public-sector entities” including established industry organizations (acting in either a for-profit or a non-profit capacity), informal groups of subject matter experts, commercial vendors, and governmental agencies” and these standards development organizations can function on a national or international level.

To prepare for this Discussion, consider the perspectives offered by the presenters in this week’s video on the diverse roles played by standards development organizations and the federal government in the ever-evolving process of setting and enforcing standards for health information. Then, using the Walden Library databases as well as the Internet, conduct a literature review on standards development organizations, as well as on federal government initiatives related to health information standards and the agencies that promote them.
By Day 4, post a comprehensive response to the following:

• What do you consider to be the most effective approach to establishing and enforcing standards for health information? Who should be involved in the standards development process and to what extent? Explain your reasoning.

• How might the involvement of the federal government be of benefit to the standards development process? How might it hinder the process? Provide a specific example of each possibility and explain your reasoning.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings.

By Day 6, respond to at least one of your colleagues’ postings in one or more of the following ways:
• Ask a probing question.
• Expand on the colleague’s posting with additional insight and resources.
• Offer polite disagreement or critique, supported with evidence.

In addition, you may respond as follows:
• Offer and support an opinion.
• Validate an idea with your own experience.
• Make a suggestion or comment that guides or facilitates the discussion.
Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what you have learned and/or any insights you have gained as a result of your colleagues’ comments. You are not required to post these final insights.
