Watch the selection from the Noam Chomsky-Michel Foucault debate. Foucault argues that the fundamental political task today is to ruthlessly critique/criticize all social/political institutions, forms of control and domination, and so on. Chomsky argues that the fundamental task today is to envision a better world free of coercion. Foucault worries that doing so would result in precisely the kind of Marxist regimes that emerged in the 20th century (Stalin, Mao, etc). Your assignment is to stake a position on the basic fault lines of their back-and-forth. What do you think, is critique the ultimate critical task today, or is envisioning and planning a better world? Foucault obviously thinks that it is dangerous to do both. Make a forceful argument.
