What does professionalism mean to you as a physical therapy student and a future physical therapist? Describe a difficult situation or set-back you have experienced and what you learned from it.What unique talents do you to bring to the new class.
Webster defines physical therapy as “therapy for the preservation, enhancement, or restoration of movement and physical function impaired or threatened by disease, injury, or disability that utilizes therapeutic exercise, physical modalities (such as massage and electrotherapy), assistive devices, and patient education and training.” I believe they did not capture the term in its totality; they forgot the mental, emotional, and community aspects. As co-owner in my family’s at-home care business, I am responsible for learning every part of the business. My first time shadowing our PT was life-changing; watching the interactions with the clients sparked something in me. I became invested in the full-cycle process from the initial meeting to creating care plans to the follow-up. Physical therapy has connected me with my patient population on a deeper level of care.
From high school through college, engineering was my top choice for my career. I thought extensively about constructing and developing structures, especially heavy civil infrastructures such as dams, tunnels, and bridges. As the first of five children to graduate with a degree, achieving my Bachelor of Science from the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology IUPUI was a significant accomplishment. During my years at the university, I studied Construction Engineering Management Technology. It was a major that I felt would lead me to a prestigious career and something that would make my family proud. However, I soon realized that I was not passionate about engineering as I learned more about physical therapy. It took a lot of courage to stop pursuing a profession I dedicated to my entire college career. For me, entering the profession of physical therapy is much more than a simple career choice and has required that I overcome many challenges.
I have since learned a lot more about treating injuries through my work and military experience. I have taken various first-aid training courses and found it very rewarding to have the skills to react appropriately in an emergency. I enjoy learning about the connections between human fitness and injuries. I have learned about multiple ways people can maintain their physical health, and I would appreciate the opportunity to help others improve their physical health. I am enthusiastic about the possibility of learning more about the human body through studying physical therapy and having the chance to put this knowledge into practice, by helping people who are suffering from injuries or other physical problems.
I should be admitted into the physical therapy program at NAME OF SCHOOL because of my unwavering commitment to this career. My experience with my family’s at-home health care business has enhanced my love for physical therapy. Volunteering as a soccer coach paired with my military knowledge will be woven into the experience that I will bring into the program. I will use my life experiences and family to push myself further, and I am determined to succeed in a career that I feel fortunate to do every day. My passion for fitness and the elderly population will drive me to create a program that will focus on keeping the older community active. My long-term goal is to open an outpatient client in Nigeria with my brother. I would love to go back to my home country, give back to the people, and better equip them for recovery.
