Case Study:
A patient reports to the sleep study center for polysomnography. His initial polysomnography showed an average of 40 respiratory events per hour. The patient was fitted with an oral appliance. This reduced the patient’s snoring and daytime sleepiness, but it did not significantly change the number of respiratory events. The patient refused CPAP, so he was referred to an ear, nose, and throat surgeon. The surgeon removed some tissue from the patient’s throat. This alone did not improve the patient’s symptoms. A subsequent polysomnography showed that the combination of the oral appliance and the surgery did eliminate the respiratory events.
