Memos: Purpose and Format

What to do.
For this project, you will evaluate your current communication practices by analyzing a previously written document for work or school and drafting your findings in the form of a memo.

Purpose/Audience.
Your audience for this project is me. I will use this project to get a better understanding of your strengths and challenges in communication, especially writing. Because Project One informs me of each student’s strengths and challenges in communication, specifically, writing, I will not provide comprehensive formatting and citing guidelines since providing such guidance does not allow me to see everyone’s current location in their writing and researching journeys. In short, you should use what you know or have learned about writing to help you be successful with this project. You should also use the materials that can be found in the “Project One” module and assigned readings in Writing in Professional Contexts to design your memo.

How to do it.
Choose one document of no more than four pages that you have written for school or work. Although there are no specific requirements as to the kind of document that one could use for the project, here is a brief list of documents that one could analyze for the project: a report, email, letter, essay, presentation, brochure, infographic, plan, article, memo, review, webpage, etc. The selected document must be your work, not the work of another person. After carefully selecting your document, you will draft a memo that explores the purpose, audience, and context of the sample document. You should also explore your writing strengths and challenges as a business, technical, and/or professional communicator and explore some writing practices (skills, concepts, perspectives) that you would like to personally develop in this course.

Medium (Format).
The memo should follow the conventions of a business memo. The memo should be approximately 700 words in length, roughly 1 ¾ pages single-spaced. The memo should be in 12-point readable font, such as Times New Roman. For more information about format, please consult Writing in Professional Contexts or documents that can be found in the “Project One” module.

Submission.
Project One is due 9/5 by 11:59 pm. In the event a submission attempt is unsuccessful (memo and sample document do not upload correctly), you will be given three attempts to submit your memo and sample document. Please compile the memo and sample document into one document (easier for me to read). Your document needs to be in .docx or .pdf file format.
