CULTURE:
A Particular Place
Essaypro
Objectives:
1. To write a paper that entertains and informs.
2. To write a paper with a controlling thesis.
3. To prove your thesis with a personal narrative and description of the place.
4. To write a paper that is well organized.
5. To use correct English.
Audience:
Your classmates and instructor
Length:
Three pages, double-spaced (about 1,000 words)
Task:
Culture is the ideas and customs of a people during a specific period of time. Culture can mean different things to different people, even if we grow up in the same country. What is your “culture”? Is there a place that represents what you think of as your culture?
Brainstorm a list of places that might represent your culture. Everyone’s place will, of course, be different. After you have chosen a specific place, write an essay that describes this place in detail and proves how that place represents your culture.
Your paper should include a personal narrative, that is a personal story, that helps us see this place and how it reflects your culture. You may also use description in this paper to help your reader “see” the place. Remember, description isn’t just what you see with your eyes, but also what you hear, taste, touch and smell.
The more specific your place is, the better. Don’t try to write about a whole city, for example. Instead, you could write about the place you and your friends hung out after high school…or a baseball field where you scored the winning run…or your grandparents’ farm…
To be clear, this paper MUST be centered around one place. Do not write about an event if it takes place in several different places; do not focus on a person or a life event unless it can all be linked to one specific place. If your paper is not centered around one place, you will be asked to rewrite (see the guidelines for formal papers in the course information section).
