Describe a social situation that has impacted your life or the life of someone you know.

One of the sociological concepts discussed in Chapter 1 is the “sociological imagination.” For this assignment, you will use the sociological imagination to examine and analyze the influence of social forces on an individual’s life. Please note that there are two parts to this short paper assignment. (See the “C. Wright Mills Article Excerpt” link for insight regarding the idea of “the sociological imagination.”)
Assignment Instructions:
Part 1: Describe a social situation that has impacted your life or the life of someone you know. Note: When we speak of a social situation in the sociologically sense, we are referring to those situations that impact an individual or group of people in a radical manner (such as how a turn-down in the economy might cause loss of jobs which would impact the life of an individual or family dependent upon working for a living). (10 points) Minimum length – 1/4 page (about 6 full lines of text, or 100 words) (15 pts.)
Part 2: Using the sociological imagination, determine whether the situation you have described can be attributed to social forces rather than individual characteristics. (Hint: Take a look at the social forces that may have been in place that influenced the situation such as the state of the economy, social/economic status, religion, societal norms and values, beliefs, family influence, or ideas about gender roles, for example.) (15 points) Minimum length – 1/2 page (about 12 full lines of text or 200 words). (30 pts.)
Special Format Instructions:
1. Please provide a separate discussion along with a title or heading for each part. Discussions must be thoughtful and in-depth and will be graded accordingly.
2. Do not include the questions in your presentation.
3. Proof-read your work. Hint: Use spell/grammar check to check for writing errors. (Points will be deducted for errors.)
4. Total page length should be about 3/4 page double-spaced (About 18 full lines of text, or 300 words). See above instructions for specifics on each part. Please note that the length refers to the discussion parts. Do not include headings, titles or sub-titles when calculating your paper length.
